PRAY FOR WOMEN AFFECTED BY CANCER
by Kristen West McGuire
When a sister in Christ has cancer, our hearts ache to help, yet we often feel lost about what to do. Receive the wisdom of those who’ve walked this path before you. The quiet gift of presence is the most powerful offering you can make.
Cancer can be isolating. Treatment may require frequent travel and affect immunity, so in-person visitors may be restricted. Opt for frequent, brief notes, calls, or visits. A two-minute phone call or a text that simply says, "Thinking of you, praying for you," shows your sister you care. Keep visits short and peaceful, when allowed. Perhaps you can pray aloud a prayer that has meaning to her, or read aloud a section of a favorite book. End your visit with a loving touch—a hug or a hand-squeeze—to offer physical reassurance.
Move beyond the vague offer of "Let me know if you need anything," and instead offer specific, recurring help. Could you commit to bringing a meal every Tuesday, or taking her children to practice, or cleaning her house for an hour on Saturday? This practical, regular assistance is a profound grace, easing the burden not only on your friend but also on her caregiver/s.
Finally, resist the urge to offer medical opinions or tell your friend to "fight." The most important thing to say is, "I am here for you." Offer a listening heart that allows her to express her sadness, fear, or even anger without judgment. Offer your quiet, consistent presence and love.

Lord, We Pray:
• that women with cancer would be healed in body, mind, and spirit, and receive the comfort of loving care by all medical professionals;
• for women facing friends and family who may disagree with their treatment choices, that they would respect the patient;
• for women exhausted by the ongoing treatment symptoms that overcome her body;
• for women struggling with job losses, financial costs, and lifestyle changes due to cancer;
• for women who experience insensitive and difficult interactions; and
• for perseverance, seeking what is truly best for their lives.
Amen
