Although the consumer price index spiked after the pandemic, inflation has slowed. Middle class households may be pinched, but families below the poverty line are squeezed. Yet compare the plight of the poor in our country to the desperate situation of victims of chronic poverty resulting from war, famine, natural disasters and dictatorships. The order to help the poor in Matthew 25 is not to be taken lightly, even in bad economies.
The Center for Global Development recently analyzed the effect of investments by the United States in foreign aid. They estimate that programs overseas have saved as many as 1.5M lives each year. While as Catholics, we do not support international birth control measures, we will always support food and healthcare for the poor. Since the U.S. dialed back on foreign aid, our time to help has come.
We do not have to wait for Lent to give. For millions of people, malnutrition and ill health is imposed on them by unfair circumstances. We can be the answer to prayer for so many people, by sharing a mere fraction of what the Lord has given to us. Those to whom much has been given, much is expected. (Luke 12:48)

International Catholic Migration Commission works with families who have been forced from their homes due to war or oppression. They provide food, shelter, therapy, and economic opportunities in 40 countries.
Catholic Extension Societysupports the Catholic faith and outreach in the poorest parts of the U.S. Their funding provides vital help to rural and urban parishes with limited means.
Lord, We Pray:
• for women victimized by wars or violence;
• for women working hard to obtain the barest necessities for their children;
• for women who share even when they are in need;
• for women who grieve too many losses;
• for women whose health is poor due to malnourishment;
• for women whose leadership is ignored and attacked;
and
• for those women who persevere anyway. Grant them the success of their hands.
